DMS teacher Carlos Hernandez named RCPS Teacher of the Year

Carlos Hernandez hugs his wife Christy after being named RCPS Teacher of the Year at the 2018 TOTY CelebrationConyers, Ga. - It was a beautiful, star-filled evening as Rockdale County Public Schools celebrated the teacher superstars from each school and named Carlos Hernandez of Gen. Ray Davis Middle School the RCPS Teacher of the Year at the 2018-19 Teacher of the Year Celebration, Tuesday, October 16, 2018, at Rockdale Career Academy.

Attendees were greeted by cheerleaders from Salem High School and Heritage High School. Inside, they walked the red carpet and were greeted by pint-sized "paparazzi" played by photography and media students from Pine Street Elementary and Gen. Ray Davis Middle School.

During the ceremony, each school-level Teacher of the Year was honored on stage with a video profile as family, friends, administrators, co-workers, and students gathered to cheer on each honoree. Each of the three finalists - Amy Baxter of Rockdale County High, Carlos Hernandez of DMS, Liz McGowan of Rockdale Career Academy - were specially highlighted.

Salem student Anari Dixon and the Salem Singers performed "The World's Greatest."

At the end of the evening, Superintendent Dr. Terry Oatts announced the district Teacher of the Year - Carlos Hernandez of Gen. Ray Davis Middle School.

Honorees received gifts from local business sponsors, including Cannon Financial Strategists, Georgia Power, Georgia United Credit Union, Hedrick Family Dentistry, Kroger, NuVision Financial, the RCPS Foundation, Ameritas, Barnes & Noble, Belk, Coca-Cola Bottling United, Cowan Ace Hardware, Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, Dr. Nancy's Body Soul Essentials, Fidelity Bank, The Fit Factory, Jim 'N Nick's BBQ, Little Olive Soaps, Nancy Lumpkin, Mutual of Omaha, Piedmont Rockdale Hospital, Poppin' Stop, Synovus Bank, The Upper Hand Day Spa, THP Printing, United Community Bank.

RCPS School Nutrition provided fine dining while pianist Andrew Hayes provided music.
