Elementary School - Virtual Learning Option 2022-2023

Parents who want the VIRTUAL learning option for their elementary child (grades K-5) for 2022-2023 must log in to their Infinite Campus Parent Portal and make the virtual selection for each child. The application deadline has been extended to April 1, 2022.

Families that would like assistance with the application process may join a member of the K-5 Virtual Learning team using the following link K-5 Virtual Learning Application Help Desk (CLICK HERE). The link will open 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 18, 21, 22, 24, 25, 28, 31. Parents please also the check the virtual application process slides (link below) for directions.

Parents who want the IN-PERSON learning option (five days a week, in-person) for their child for 2022-2023 do not need to do anything. The default option for 2022-2023 is in-person learning.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) Elementary School - Virtual Learning Option 2022-2023

What if I do not feel comfortable sending my elementary student to school for in-person instruction?
Rockdale County Public Schools is offering a district wide virtual option for K-5 elementary students who wish to continue their education virtually.  
 

How can I sign up for the virtual option?
Parents must complete an online application via Infinite Campus Parent Portal for each student wishing to enroll in the district virtual option. In the Parent Portal, select Documents Tab. You will be asked to complete the application.


If my child is already in the virtual option for 2021-2022, do I need to sign them up again?

Yes.
 

Is there a deadline to choose the K-5 Elementary Virtual Option?
The application window to apply for the virtual option has been extended to April 1, 2022.  Parents must complete the application in the Parent Portal during this time.

What if I do not have a Parent Portal account?
Detailed instructions on creating a Parent Portal can be found on our website at www.rockdaleschools.org/infinitecampus.  You will need your child’s Student ID number.*For help with your child's Student ID Number, contact the front desk of your school during work hours. If your school's office is closed, contact [email protected].


My child will be in Kindergarten during the 2022-23 school year and is not yet in Infinite Campus; how can I register him/her?
If you are interested in registering your upcoming Kindergarten student in the Virtual Option for 2022-23, please contact Raquel Lett-Anderson in the Office of Accountability & School Performance at (770) 860-4275 or [email protected] on or before May 27, 2022.


How long will I have to commit to the virtual option?
Students who are signed up for the virtual option are expected to remain in the program for the full academic semester.


Will the school district provide a device for my student?
Rockdale County Public Schools students enrolled in kindergarten through fifth grades will be provided a device for virtual learning.


What is the process for returning my child to the in-person model?
Parents who wish to return to the in-person model will only be able to do so at the end of each grading period. Parents must notify their child’s principal, in writing, by November 30, 2022.


What is the attendance expectation for students who participate in the virtual option?
Students will be required to participate in synchronous and asynchronous learning. Students are expected to attend instructional sessions and complete all assignments. Attendance will be monitored daily.
 

What are synchronous and asynchronous learning?  
Students will be required to participate in online meetings/lessons at specific times with their teachers (synchronous learning) and complete activities and assignments on their own time (asynchronous learning).


What are the expectations for attending synchronous lessons?
Synchronous conduct for Parents, Learning Coaches, and Students:
o    Login promptly at the scheduled time for your live class sessions using the RCPS issued device.  
o    Questions and conversations should be related to the lesson.
o    Interactions with others should be respectful.  
o    Cameras should be on during lessons.
o    Students should have a designated workspace. We ask that students not attend sessions while in bed.
o    Students are expected to remain in the session and actively participate.
o    Students will be expected to request permission if they need to step away from the session.
o    If there are multiple students in your home, each student needs to log into a session individually.  
o    To limit learning disruptions during live class sessions, students should follow their local school’s PBIS expectations. If a student is causing a disruption that negatively impacts the learning environment or engages in behavior that is prohibited, they will be removed from the live class session, their parents will be contacted, and the student may receive an academic and/or behavior consequence. Excessive violations of the Behavior Code may result in the K-5 virtual placement being revoked and the student being required to return to their home school for in-person instruction.
o    To limit learning disruptions that can negatively impact the learning environment, a parent/guardian or learning coach cannot interrupt class to address concerns with a teacher. Parents or Learning Coaches who wish to speak directly with a teacher, may send a private chat message to the teacher, or they may call or email the teacher to schedule an appointment. The K-5 Virtual privilege may be revoked if a parent or learning coach repeatedly interrupts class or causes a disruption of the learning environment, their student will be required to return to their home school for in-person instruction.


What if my student is not able to attend the synchronous class sessions?
The student will be required to review the recorded lesson within 24 hours. The teacher must be notified prior to a student missing a live session and a written excuse must be submitted to the teacher following RCPS Board Policy.


Will my student receive lunch?
RCPS School Nutrition is developing a plan to provide meals to students choosing K-5 virtual. Where applicable, these meals may require your normal school lunch charges. As part of the online application, parents will be asked to indicate an interest in receiving school meals while attending school at home.


How will my student receive additional help if needed?
Teachers will provide support during the intervention/enrichment blocks. Students may also request additional support from the teachers and/or the school counselor.


What will an instructional day look like?
A sample schedule will also be provided for review later on this page and in the K-5 Virtual Learning Parent Handbook.
 

Will my student receive grades?
Yes. Students enrolled in the virtual option will follow the grading criteria outlined by Rockdale County Public Schools.


Will the virtual learning option require my student to receive support from home?
Yes. All K-5 RCPS virtual students are required to have a voluntary Learning Coach (parent/guardian/designated person over 18 years old). If the Learning Coach is NOT a parent/legal guardian, the parent/legal guardian will need to provide written permission for the school to release student information.


What are the duties of the Learning Coach?
The primary duties of the Learning Coach include but are not limited to the following:  
o    Read emails at least once per day.  
o    Answer all communication within 24 hours.
o    Complete all paperwork requested.
o    Keep student information up to date.
o    Monitor the student’s assignment completion daily.
o    Check grades at least once per week.  
o    Ensure that students attend all required live lessons.  
o    Monitor students when taking assessments and tests to ensure integrity in testing.
o    Regularly monitor and respond to correspondence. 
o    Answer all communication within 24 hours.
o    Complete all paperwork requested.
o    Keep student information up to date.
o    Ensure a learning environment that is free from distractions. 
o    Monitor their student’s assignment completion daily.
o    Check grades at least once per week.
o    Ensure that students attend all required live lessons on time.
o    Monitor students when taking assessments and tests to ensure integrity in testing.


Will there be an orientation for students and parents?
Yes. More information is forthcoming.
 

Will new students to the district who complete registration after March 22, 2022, be able to choose the elementary virtual option?
Due to staffing, during the 2022-23 school year, this will not be an option available.





































































Elementary School - Learning Options 2021-2022

Parents who want the VIRTUAL learning option for their elementary child (grades K-5) for 2021-2022 must log in to their Infinite Campus Parent Portal and make the virtual selection for each child during March 22, 2021-April 9, 2021.

Parents who want the IN-PERSON learning option (five days a week, in-person) for their child for 2021-2022 do not need to do anything. The default option for 2021-2022 is in-person learning.

Elementary School - Spring 2021 Learning Options

Parents/guardians must log in to their Infinite Campus Parent Portal to select a Second Semester Learning Option for each child by December 4, 2020. Those who do not make a selection will be assigned a Virtual schedule. RCPS reserves the right to adjust plans for the spring semester based upon local public health conditions.

Hybrid (in-person and virtual)

Under the hybrid schedule, there will be two days of in-person, face-to-face instruction at school and three days of virtual learning at home.

Virtual, School-based (full-time virtual)

•    Students receive 100% of instruction virtually.
•    Full-time virtual schedule includes students receiving 100% of instruction virtually with their scheduled school-based teachers.
•    Full course offering
•    3rd Quarter commitment. Parents/guardians of elementary students will be able to make a different Learning Option selection for the 4th Quarter.

Elementary School - Virtual Fall 2020

Rockdale County Public Schools will be fully-virtual for the fall 2020 semester. Student schedules will be available in the Infinite Campus Portal starting on the following dates:

High Schools (grades 9-12) (including RCA, RVC, & ROC) – August 13, 2020.
Middle Schools (grades 6-8) (including RVC Middle) – August 19, 2020.
Elementary Schools – August 20, 2020.

Will the school district provide a device for my student?
Rockdale County Public Schools (RCPS) is a One-to-One district. All students in grades PK-12 receive a school-issued device to use for schoolwork. Check your school's website for information about making an appointment for picking up your device. Your schools will communicate to you information about picking up your school issued device. Please make sure your contact information is updated in your Infinite Campus Parent Portal account and your annual forms are signed in the Infinite Campus Parent Portal account. What do I do if my student's device is broken or we need technical support?
Parents and students can make an appointment with their school's Intel team or DLS for technical support. Click here to find your school's staff directory.

What if have limited internet access or no internet access?
Click here for information on low-cost or free internet providers. In addition, RCPS is developing plans to deploy internet hotspots in parked RCPS school buses at key locations for RCPS students to use with RCPS school-issued devices. Click here for more information.


What is the attendance expectation for virtual learning?
Students will be required to participate in synchronous and asynchronous learning. Students are expected to attend instructional sessions and complete all assignments. Attendance will be taken during each content block. Faculty and staff will keep a log for attendance during enrichment, remediation, SEL, and advisement times. Students are allowed to leave Virtual class to pick up RCPS meals. Students, please let your teacher know if you need to leave during class time to pick up your RCPS meal. 


What are synchronous and asynchronous learning?
Students will be required to participate in online meetings/lessons at specific times with their teachers (synchronous learning) and complete activities and assignments on their own time (asynchronous learning). Synchronous lessons can include direct instruction with time for guided and/or independent practice. Local schools and teachers will share weekly synchronous and asynchronous schedules through itsLearning.

Will my student receive lunch?
Students will have access to meals, regardless of their Learning Option.

Hybrid Learning Option students will eat meals in their classrooms.
Virtual Learning Option students will continue to have meals delivered using elementary bus stop locations. Students are allowed to leave during Virtual class time to pick up their RCPS meal. 


How will my student receive additional help if needed?
Teachers will provide support during the intervention/enrichment blocks. Students may also request additional support from the teachers and/or the school counselor. Local schools will provide information on teachers’ office hours and how to request additional assistance.

What is a voluntary Learning Coach and why is one needed?
A voluntary Learning Coach (parent/guardian/designated person over 18 years old) is preferred to assist elementary students with the following:  

    •   Ensure that students attend all required live lessons via Microsoft (MS) Teams.
    •   Ensure that students log-in on time for each class session and remain for the duration of the session.
    •   Monitor student’s assignment completion daily, via itsLearning, to include synchronous and asynchronous assignments.
    •   Monitor students when taking assessments.
