RCPS Celebrates Black History Month 2021

Here are just a few of the events, activities, and resources throughout the district:

Heritage High School celebrates with activities and trivia highlighting HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) and traditional black fraternities and sororities, hearing student thoughts on the Civil Rights movement and the Black Lives Matter movement and the events that catapulted these historic movements, and a virtual assembly with performances, HBCU virtual tours, awards, and more.

Salem High School celebrates with activities throughout the month including a virtual Black History Month assembly with performances and video and art creations by SHS students, the SHS Fine Arts faculty and students, and CTAE faculty and students; to view the virtual assembly, CLICK HERE.

Rockdale Magnet School for Science and Technology (RMSST) Black STEM Student Union (BSSU) is sponsoring a month long exploration around the theme "Social Change & Civic Engagement - Past and Present" via social media posts and interactive Padlets, and more.

Conyers Middle School - Activities throughout the month include wearing red/green/black/African print or celebrating historically black colleges and universities with HBCU college wear, creating backgrounds in Teams celebrating an influential African American, virtually taking the High Museum Black History Tour, and more. 

Lorraine Elementary - Activities throughout the month such as the Black History Month Young Georgia Authors Writing Contest, BHM Trivia, speeches on African American historical figures, Civil Rights Poster creation, and more.

Barksdale Elementary - Activities throughout the month such as Daily Spotlights, guest speakers such as Andrea Lewis, the first African American female pilot in the Georgia Air National Guard, learning about the life of black composers or musicians, learning about notable figures such as Jackie Robinson and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and more.  

February 26, 2021 - Black History Month Celebration Day at RMSST.

March 2021 - RMSST Black STEM professionals series in with an alumni-hosted panel discussion.
